The bas-reliefs from the Angkorian temples such as the Bayon, describe precisely the daily activities of the people living in the 12th or 13th century. From the scenes of the markets to the making of jewelry, wooden objects or potteries, the galleries of the Bayon are particularly fascinating. One street shows a popular market place, where artisans are busy in their workshops and shops. Another panel shows people preparing for a festivity, preparing food, one cook ready to put a piglet into a large pan, others grilling fishes, using mortars. Another panel show carpenters, workers carrying wooden boards. Another scene shows jewelers with their cisels and tools.
One can see clearly that arts and crafts are long standing traditions in Cambodia. Though many artisans having disappeared under the Khmer Rouge regime and with them some of the ancestral traditions, one can still admire the marvels of useful objects crafted with simple materials such as bamboos, rattan or sedge.
