All Khmer art is fundamentally religious. The myths and legends of the Khmer and their iconographical corpus are based and derived from the main Indian religions: Hinduism, Shaivism, Vishnuism, Buddhism. In the figurative arts, there is a scarcity of Buddhist themes in Khmer temples. Most of the Khmer visual narratives are derived from Hindu literary sources such as the Mahabharata, including the great epic of prince Rama, one of the earthly reincarnation of Vishnu in the Ramayana.
